	osmic forces\, such as earth\,\nlightning\, and thunder\, signifying the o
	ntological status of forces more\npowerful than humans in this world. The 
	patterns in Kite’s new work draw from a\nvisual lexicon adapted from Lakȟó
	ta quillwork and beadwork held in St. Louis\ncollections\, in which abstra
	ct symbols carry layered semiotic meanings and\nreference celestial maps\,
	 embroidery\, and other cultural signifiers that remain\npartially illegib

	the graphic score for Wíhaŋyablapi\n(of St. Louis)\, an outdoor sculpture
